Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts
Cape Town summers are defined by a few key components: overcrowded beaches and granadilla lollies, bumper-to-bumper traffic and zero city parking, a flood of tourists and overpriced cocktails, and of course the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts! The annual string of live music performances by local and international acts always creates enormous excitement and this year is no different.
Before we even get into the music, let’s appreciate the setting, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Over 5 square kilometres of impeccably maintained lush gardens set at the foot of Table Mountain, there could hardly be a better outdoor concert venue! The sloped lawn that looks down on the concert stage is the perfect place to indulge in a picnic or simply sprawl out in the sun, and when the sun sets it only gets more magical. Watching a concert at the Gardens is not something you’ll soon forget!
With over 20 international and local acts, the 2018/19 line-up is as strong as ever. It includes UK rock band, James, Euro-Caribbean sensation Boney M, and a plethora of local legends like Mango Groove, Jeremy Loops, Fokofpolisiekar, The Parlotones, Goldfish, and plenty more. As always, the Kirstenbosch Carols are performed over several days and are an absolute treat for the whole family.
The series kicks-off on 18 November with Tresor and Majozi, and concludes on 31 March 2019 with Goodluck and Easy Freak. During that time there’s a concert every Sunday and a few performances on alternate days, notably James on Saturday 24 November, Jeremy Loops and Crimson House on Monday 31 December for the NYE show, and recently announced Bonobo on Tuesday 8 February 2019.
Tickets for all shows are available on Webtickets and range from R150 – R190 for the majority of performances, however, expect to pay up to R565 for international acts like James, Boney M, and Bonobo. The full list is below:
