It's Fitness month coming up in May, and we're celebrating all our fitness & wellness tenants at The Point Mall. Most of us strive for a balanced lifestyle, where we can find time between responsibilities to exercise, socialise, and participate in hobbies.
However, achieving our fitness goals can sometimes be challenging. Whether it's a change of season, a lack of motivation, a new job or an injury - keeping fit can seem tricky!
But, it does not have to be as complicated as we make it out to be. A slight shift in mindset and values can improve our physical health.
5 Ways To Achieve Fitness goals & Increase Motivation:
1. Exercise for immediate results & rewards:
Make why you're working out more than "you want to lose weight" or "you want to be healthy". These are vague and are too long term to keep you going when you feel lazy. Instead, focus on immediate positive feelings such as stress reduction, a surge of energy, meeting new friends at a Pilates class or a Kauai smoothie after your workout. Think of reasons that are compelling and valuable to your daily life.
Also, combine keeping fit with other goals such as getting to work, spending more time in nature or seeing your friends/family. A bootlegger coffee is a fantastic pre-workout treat to get your energy levels up!
2. Build your fitness goals into your day
If you don’t make it to your workout, try to make your lifestyle about keeping fit rather than having a designated time to workout. For example:
- Stretch in the morning for 15 mins and do some push-ups.
- Use a standing desk or exercise ball instead of a sitting one.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Walk around your office to talk to people instead of emailing them, and walk somewhere to get lunch to get your step count in.
3. Join a group class or club.
By joining a workout group that you can commit to every week, you might feel extra pressure to get your money's worth! It's great because all you need to do is show up and follow the instructor. An ineffective workout can be a waste of time, and when you don't see or feel results, you might lose motivation. An exercise club can be a fantastic way to find a network of people who motivate you and push your efforts!
The Point Mall offers so many options of group classes. Whether you prefer a 6am HIIT style workout at SWEAT 1000 or a strength one at Leopard Lagree. BASI Pilates and BUC fitness are great choices too! Most classes run almost every day throughout the day. Check out their websites for schedules & prices.
5. Be prepared for all the excuses.
Be mindful of talking yourself out of JUST GOING, especially after a long day's work or early morning. Once you get there, you won't know why you were being so dramatic in the first place. So don't think about it. Just have a strategy in place: leave your trainers by the door, have your clothes ready and classes booked, keep your morning alarm out of reach, open curtains, etc.
6. Prioritise post-workout rest, recovery and refuelling.
We want to make sure fitness is a lifestyle, and we don't overwork ourselves after a month and avoid exercise at all costs. Hey, it happens! A great way to prevent this is to be gentle with your body and its recovery process. If your body is sore and feeling drained, skip the HIIT class and do some yoga or a light walk. Ensure you're eating the right foods and supplements to complement your workouts.
We have a fabulous range of healthy food choices at The Point. A Bootlegger breakfast, a plant powered wrap from Kauai, A poke bowl from The Poke Co or a delicious sushi platter at Chef Chen all make nutritious choices!
BONUS: Anything is better than nothing. A 10-minute walk or a few push-ups and jumping jacks in front of the TV is better than nothing.
