What is Veganuary?
Many of us started off 2023 with ambitious new health goals such as eating cleaner, exercising more and taking better care of bodies from the inside out. More and more people around the world are looking to cut down their meat consumption and explore what it means and how it feels to eat a plant-based diet. Thus, Veganuary is a challenge where for 30 days during the month of January, you commit to eating a vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian diet.
Kauai and Proveg Veganuary event
In anticipation for the new year, Kauai and Proveg hosted their annual Veganuary event at The Point Mall Kauai store and restaurant. Guests enjoyed delicious food, smoothies and snacks of their choice from Kauai’s flavourful and exciting new vegan menu!
Proveg International is a food awareness organisation working to transform the global food system by replacing animal-based products with plant-based and cultured alternatives. The Veganuary event hosted three speakers who gave some insight into the benefits of plant-based eating.
The Value of Veganuary
The purpose of Veganuary is to experiment with different ingredients to reduce your meat consumption. For thirty days, you commit to being open minded and to educate yourself and others about the benefits of veganism for our health and the longevity of the earth. With rising populations, it is important for human beings to find nutritional and satisfying alternatives to meat. Plants are farmed at a much larger scale than animals, which means the more plant-based eaters, the more farming space and food we’ll have to feed our growing populations
When you sign up for a 30 day challenge with Proveg you receive daily information and recipes sent to your email address. You can choose whether you want to commit to a vegan diet, vegetarian diet or just have some days that are meat free.
There are many ways to introduce more diversity to your daily meals. One way is to veganise the dishes you already love and make regularly. For example, in many baked goods you can replace the egg with aquafaba (the liquid left over from boiled chickpeas), while plant-based mince or lentils is an easy meat replacement in mince dishes such as pasta bolognese. There are numerous proven benefits to eating plant-based: it’s better for your health, better for the planet, and better for animals.
If you’re ready for change but need a little help, you can join the ProVeg Veggie Challenge and try eating a more plant-based diet for 30 days. The Veggie Challenge is a free online programme that provides you with daily support, along with tips and detailed recipes.
